If you are one of those people who takes great pride with regards to looking after ones garden, then chances are you carry out more than merely cutting the lawn. You probably cut the edges using a Petrol strimmer. A grass strimmer utilizes a cutting line to cut grass as well as weeds which grow down the edges of paths, walkways as well as driveways. From time to time you will need to change the line in your grass strimmer.\

1. Thoroughly clean the bottom of the grass strimmer head. Remove the retaining cover (on a few brands, this cover pulls on / off, some models it needs to be unscrewed) and also the spool from the strimmer head.

2. Cut a brand new piece of line around 6 ft long. Slide 1 end through the starter opening on the spool. Wind round the spool in a counterclockwise direction. You will usually see arrows around the spool which reveal the correct direction for you to wind the line.

3. Leave around 6 ins of line once completed winding the line round the spool. Hook this end on one of the slots found in the spool to keep it in position. Press spool back on to strimmer head.

4. Feed the loose end of the line through the opening on the strimmer head. Tug firmly to release the string from the slot on the spool. Reattach the retaining cover.

Tips & Warnings

Hedge trimmer
Several grass strimmers can be a dual-feed rather than single-feed. You will discover 2 openings located immediately opposite one another on the strimmer head. Wind the line round the lower area of the spool along with the upper part and feed 2 ends through each opening inside the strimmer head.

In the case of grass strimmers using screw-on caps, you will often need to rotate the cap in a clockwise direction instead of a counter clockwise direction in order to remove it.

Don't change the cutting string for an electric powered grass strimmer without having unplugged the strimmer first.

Make sure that both the spool as well as retaining cover are safely attached on to the grass strimmer head prior to use. Otherwise, the cover or spool might take flight from the strimmer resulting in injuries.

If you are searching for new petrol strimmer cord we have a number of products on our site to fit your needs. We also have petrol/electric strimmers as well from all the top brands.

Probably the commonest domestic version of the strimmer is the electric strimmer. It has the clear advantage over the petrol strimmer of being very light and very easy to work with. The maneuverability of the electric strimmer makes it the obvious choice for most domestic uses.

It does have two drawbacks however. The first is obvious. It is electric. Therefore it has a power cable that must be plugged into the mains circuitry. If you do not realize where this is going then I will explain. The length of the power cable will restrict the range that the strimmer can be used over. This means for large gardens the electric strimmer is limited in its potential usefulness. If you do have a large garden, and are considering purchasing a strimmer then do not overlook this important point. This issue can be overcome by the use of extension cables but it is an extra consideration that needs to be taken into account.

The second drawback is probably not quite so important as the first. The electric strimmer tends to be cheaper than the petrol strimmer. The reason for this is that it is invariably not as robust as the petrol version. Let's be clear. The petrol version is, in almost all cases, the superior cutter. But if you do not need your trimmer to cope with large areas of dense undergrowth on a regular basis then the electric strimmer is perfectly acceptable and appropriate.

Remember the garden strimmer is a great garden tool that complements your mower by enabling you to reach areas quickly and easily that your mower would be unable to reach. But do not be fooled into thinking that most expensive is best.

Petrol strimmer

The main advantage of a petrol Strimmer is convenience. Strimmers are much more powerful and versatile compared to their electric counterparts. As they don't require cables, they allow the user better access to the garden. They can also be used in wet conditions and pack much more power than your average electric strimmer. This means areas that would be tricky to cut with an electric strimmer will be much easier to tackle with their engine-driven equivalent.
